I love when someone takes a great event and makes it better.
I also love gumbo.
Combine those two loves, and you have Saturday's Gumbo Throwdown at Vineyard Farmers Market.
The idea is simple: five chefs make a roux, toss in chicken and sausage--or seafood--and compete for the public's favor. Of course, if you've ever made gumbo, you know that the execution is a bit more complex.
Last year's event was good, but each event I've been to at Vineyard has been increasingly better than the last (see previous post on the Quince Festival). Saturday's throwdown was no exception; the event was fun, energetic, and above all tasty. All five competitors offered something flavorful and unique.
I couldn't stick around till the end, but I heard through Twitter that Dusty Buns took top honors. I loved their gumbo (and the accompanying "baby bun!"), but I have to say it: I voted for Best Butcher. This was their first competition at the market, and it was outside the realm of their normal offerings, but owner Corey used his dad's recipe (pictured below), and the flavors took me back to my childhood in Louisiana. Just thinking about it now, I want another bowl!

A few more photos from the event are below. Connect with Vineyard Farmers Market on Facebook for more, and for info on future events.

Kim, excited to try that award-winning gumbo.
