Last week I flew to Denver to meet my brother, who had set out a few days earlier from North Carolina. I finally convinced him to move to California--for a while, at least.
As we descended through the Tehachapi Mountains on our final leg of the trip, Jason was anxious to see the valley floor. Too bad his first view was blocked by a thick layer of smog. Looking at the cows on the adjacent hillsides, he smiled and said, "Mmmm. Smog-fed beef." Still, he was antsy.
"How much farther," he asked.
"Just 40 more miles to Earlimart," I assured him.
Jason had one thing on his mind: tacos.

For months, Jason's read about my taco adventures, and while he's had plenty of Mexican food, he had never tried a taco from a truck. We targeted Aldos in Earlimart, which some say serves the best in the valley. They definitely compete:

They were so good, in fact, that I can't get Jason to stop talking about tacos. If only there were a few other spots I could take him. I'll share more as we explore.
Okay, your turn: Do you remember your first?

Ah, yes. It was about 20 years ago.
A taco truck next to Ventura Supermarket.
I remember that my boyfriend ordered us some unusual cut of meat, but I don't remember which cut. I do remember that it was chewy, but very very tasty.
And the beginning of a beautiful relationship - with taco trucks that is.

Geez — it was sooooo long ago, but remember my first like it was just yesterday.
La Elegante. Frebby Awards. 2011. Tacos were going for 25 cents each.
Me gusta.
