Okay, it's not new. It's been downtown for years, located at Fulton St. and San Joaquin, but the lot there that housed the market was recently acquired by Granville Homes, and (according to rumors), the market was asked to move. It's found new life in a parking lot a couple of blocks away, near Broadway and Tuolomne.
Market coordinator Pat Scrivner (pictured talking with Kiel below) was able to move two-thirds of the tents to the new location, and says she's saving the others for expansion plans at the Tower Farmers Market. She's sewn all of the new shade coverings that top those tents.

The new backdrop for the market is the large mural on the north side of Broadway Studios; while I'm sure this is met with mixed emotion, the mural and the surrounding urban landscape create an energy that's unique to this market. The lot belongs to Cliff Tutelian, who is crafting plans for a food court in the adjacent Parker-Nash building, and opens to Broadway, facing the soon-to-open Mayflower Lofts.
One thing to note: this isn't a certified market, though there is a "certified corner" (pictured below). That means you'll see a few things that aren't grown locally: bananas and mangoes, for example. If you're wanting to know more about where you food comes from, though, just ask the farmer. After striking out last weekend at Vineyard Farmers Market, Whole Foods and the grocery store, I picked up six pounds of Fresno chilis from a farm in west Fresno.
Check it out Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

I was at the new location this morning. It was buzzing with more activity than I have ever seen. We picked up chinese okra, asian cucumbers, onions, avocados, and berries. I asked a familiar vendor what he thought of the new site, and he said the parking and logistical issues are more difficult. But all are glad that there still exists a venue...

Difficulty with parking is part of the downtown experience, right? :-)
There's a lot of street parking around, and that's not a busy area during the work day, but it's definitely not as accessible as the previous location.

I think this was a good move for the market. I think it gave it a fresh start and Pat seems excited about it. That energy will come out in the market's rebirth.
Also having the mural as the backdrop and in the shadow of some tall buildings does evoke that urban feel.

Thanks for the info about this market - I knew it wasn't certified and that some of the produce comes from other places, but good to know that some of the farmers are local. Also, I love the way the market looks with the mural backdrop. Very cool.

It's not that the produce "comes from other places" it's that some of the vendors are not actual farmers, meaning they purchase the food they sell from a third party. A good rule of thumb is that if the fruit has a sticker on it, it has been through a packing house, meaning: third party. The certified section of this market is where you will find the actual farmers, and I always try to support them first. I can't wait to check out the new location, it looks great with the mural backdrop!

I'm pretty sure those bananas weren't locally grown. :) It sounds like a great location for them. Best of luck.

I mentioned that, along with the mangoes - but there is a certified corner with local farmers (and their local produce).
