What are you eating?

There was a lot to see and taste this weekend—especially if you love wine. I had plans to indulge, but spent most of the weekend recovering from a sinus infection. Okay, that's self diagnosed…all I know is that I laid down Wednesday afternoon, and woke up sometime Friday.

[What was I saying?]

Oh yeah, what about you? Did you make it out the wine trail? Try a new restaurant? Make a favorite recipe?

I ate dinner at Cracked Pepper with friends this weekend. I had only been there once before and that was in a more corporate setting where the choices were limited, but even then the food was very good.

This time it was with a group where we chose different appetizers and meals and shared the bounty. Among the notable foods was a shrimp risotto and a pork chop. I ordered the risotto. The shrimp were huge, like little lobster tails.

I would never order a pork chop as I think they are quite boring. However, one of the group did and he shared. It was very tasty.

Vatche chatted and sipped wine with us for a few minutes before the crowd came in. His personality and insight added to the experience. He said the pork chop was seasoned only with salt and pepper and that the secret was picking the right quality chop and cooking it the right way.

We concluded the night at the home of one of our group (luckily walking distance home) and sipped whiskey.

That makes for a great night of food and drink.

Color me jealous. I sipped orange juice and grocery store soup.

I'm actually a big fan of a good pork chop - bone-in, cooked slowly and to just medium (which many people think isn't healthy). I've had two in town that were memorable: at The Palms, and at Cracked Pepper. I'd eat the chop Vatche's serving any day.

Damn, now I need to go back in there.

PAO DE QUIJO
Pão de Queijo is aBrazilian Cheese Bun.
A popular breakfast and snack food.
Made of cassava starch (very common in Brazil) and cheeze (like a good Swiss cheese).
Sold at snack bars and bakeries.
Been hanging out with new co-worker from Brazil.
Had drinks at Sambas on Friday.
He and bartender got to talking, then these magically showed up in front of us. My friend said you must try this.
AND IT WAS VERY VERY GOOD.

Sounds like your friend has the connection - that sounds pretty good. Then again, I doubt Sambas would do you wrong.

Went to Ruth's Chris Steak House, James. What a wonderful meal. Started with the Crabtini, lobster bisque, cesear salad, lamb chops with creamed spinach and asparagus with hollandaise sauce. Finished off with Chocolate Sin dessert. It was fabulous. We are going back for Christmas Eve dinner. I usually like to eat local but once or twice a year I will make an exception!

Lori, that sounds amazing! Do they do something special for Christmas Eve, or is that just a personal choice?

I tried Monterey Bay spot shrimp with roe sauted in onions, garlic, butter and wine. Fantastic! They were fresh caught and as sweet as lobster.
