Sunnyside Deli

Reviewed by jamescollier on Jun 03, 2008

What's it like?

I'll admit (again) that I'm a little skeptical of most of the places in my neighborhood, not that the selection allows me to be picky. I've driven past Sunnyside Deli thousands of times without so much as a hint of curiosity about the place, but when a co-worker insisted I try it, I had no other choice.

The little strip mall it's in (on the opposite end from Long Island Bar & Grill is out-dated, and perhaps the interior of the deli is, too, but at least it's clean. And it was busy during the lunch hour, which is always a good sign.

For less than $9 I had half of a roast beef sandwich, a salad (though the salad bar leaves a bit to be desired), and a drink. Actually, another co-worker and fan of the deli says that the deli is under-priced, especially considering the portions that are served; sandwiches come with plenty of meat and toppings, as do prepared salads. Oh, and the olives…next time I'll order a side of the olives.

Since our normal lunch venue (the cafeteria) is closed for the summer, trips to Sunnyside seem to be frequent with the office mates. A co-worker and I went again today (June 16), and both tried the French dip. The au jus was good, but forgettable; the amount of meat that they pile on, that's a different story…I think I spent under $8, which included the soda.

I went back again today because everyone around the office kept referring to the bacon that Sunnyside serves. I ordered the turkey, bacon and avacado sandwich, and all I'll say is that it's worth the trip just for pork.

Earlier this week the special was a chicken, bacon and cheddar sandwich with BBQ sauce. I originally went in for a salad, but couldn't resist the bacon.
Evidently, I'm not alone: I was told (as I drooled over a the sight of a big pile of bacon) that Sunnyside goes through about 15 pounds each day.

I can't comment on anyone specifically, but anyone serving bacon that delicious is...well, as you say, hot.
