Favorito Restaurant

What's it like?

Note: It's actually taken me a couple of weeks to finish this. Recovery from our experience was not pleasant…

On my way home from work one Friday, I received a call from my wife:

Her: "So…I just realized that today is January 30."
Me: "Yep."
Her: "I have a 10-page paper due on January 30."
Me: "Oh?"
Her: "Yeah, so what are you bringing me for dinner?"
Me: "…"

Okay, I don't remember all of the details, but somehow we settled on a very quick trip to Guadalajara so that she could focus on her paper. To our disappointment, we discovered that Guadalajara is not currently open for dinner (at least on Fridays).

Options nearby are fairly limited, so we decided to venture into Fowler, where we discovered quite a Friday-night crowd (relatively speaking, of course). We found a parking space in front of Favorito, and decided to try it out…once we figured out which door to enter.

The restaurant is a bit awkward in its setup; there is a large dance hall, which feeds into a small dining room connected to the kitchen. We felt like outsiders, and tried to ignore the perceived stares from other patrons.

Service was friendly, and we were encouraged to try the buffet. It was pretty standard fare: tacos, chili verde, enchiladas. I did note that the taco shells were fried. All in all, and okay meal, and for a decent price ($8.75 per person, I believe).

Unfortunately, it wasn't long before we felt the effects of the buffet. I have a stomach made of Cajun-fortified cast iron, so for me to feel anything after a meal is a red flag, but Kim and I were both cursing the restaurant even into the next morning. If you're in Fowler, I recommend trying the Italian restaurant around the corner (though I haven't actually eaten there).
