Mimi's Cafe

What's it like?

As a kid, I loved breakfast. I went through phases, but for many years it was one of my biggest meals, especially if my dad cooked on the weekend. Bacon and eggs, pancakes, boudin—okay, that was only a few times while we lived in Baton Rouge—Jimmy Dean sausage biscuits.

I never said ate healthy.

I’m not much of a breakfast eater these days, nor is Kim; I really only eat to get my metabolism going. But I have a client that likes to meet early, so I’ve found myself at Mimi’s a few times over the last few months.

I’ve also eaten dinner at Mimi’s, and I know that I grew up with a lot of rich foods, but the menu at Mimi’s is a bit heavy for my tastes. The food is good—it’s pretty standard fare, though the breads are quite tasty (again, heavy though). Service is about par, and the decor is standard for a chain.

The one thing that intrigues me about the restaurant, though, is how early the bar is open. Surely, not everyone who sits at a bar is looking for an alcoholic drink, but one morning I watched a man order a martini. At 8:00 in the morning. I’m not not sure what’s worse: the fact that he was drinking that early, or that there was a bartender on duty.
