I was and still am I suppose, a Java Wava fanatic. Not everything got high marks from me, but the atmosphere, quality vegetarian sandwiches, and friendly staff always kept me coming back. This Monday I decided to try their successor, Echo Street Cafe. I'm not sure if I will be as loyal to Echo Street as I was to Java Wava.
Here are my reasons:
- The interior has been reworked. Yes, it's nice, but it feels a little too sterile and corporate to me. I choose to frequent independent shops most of the time because they offer a little more charm than your average Starbucks.
-The service was less than spirited. Friendly, yes, but nothing to write home about.
-I had a vegetarian breakfast sandwich which was only ok, but nothing terribly unique and didn't have a compelling flavor. Eggs, cream cheese, etc on a croissant.
-The coffee was actually quite good. My mocha was better than I have gotten at most places.
-Also might want to rethink the music
- No restaurant will have perfect music, but I will always appreciate those that steer clear of Sheryl Crow et al.
I will be going back to try the sandwiches, but I think that in order to succeed they will need to be a little more inventive with the menu.

I went there on Sat. and had a plain bagel breakfast sandwich. And I would have to agree that it was good , but nothing terribly unique.
With it not being in my neighborhood, I doubt I will have any reason to go back.
