Breakfast Burritos

Reviewed by AttyKendall on Mar 23, 2009

What's it like?

We at Milano Restaurant have a tradition of breakfast burritos (BB's) for staff (and owners) on Thursday mornings. So far we have been to Tacos Tijuana (on Ventura/9th), Robertito's (near the tracks and Comm Hosp), Sanchez Carniceria (on Tulare in Chinatown), Rose's Cafe (north end of Fulton Mall), Lilly's (next to the Crest), and Cocina de Mama (Mariposa Mall near the clock tower). Some (like Rose's since it's right across the Mall) more than once. I'll try to update as we try new places, or find out new things about old places.

Tacos Tijuana - This is (maybe was) my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Their BB's, however, were kind of boring, and WAY too expensive.

Robertito's - Load up on the grease. And don't expect to get exactly what you order. But it'll taste good for sure.

Sanchez Carniceria - These were the most delicious of all so far. Made with care (that also means they take a while).

Rose's - not the best, but it's really the Chile Verde BB that makes it all worth having. That one is really, really good.

Lilly's - Good, cheap, and small. Cocina de Mama - You get a selection of ingredients. Put everything in it and you end up with a monster. Easily the biggest one. And pretty tasty as well.

Add to the list Don Pepe's on Gettysburg and Blackstone, and Los Panchos at Fulton Mall and Tulare.
Don Pepe BB were a bit on the pricey side but were really good, but especially because they have all the fresh (in the am) salsas and toppings out for you to take.
Los Panchos BB are good, not so much memorable, but good.
Sanchez is still in the lead.

Good list, thanks Kendall. Everyone loves a good breakfast burrito. We've been know to partake in "Breakfast Burrito Friday". There's a group of us that get ours from Arsenios at Belmont & Chestnut. They're pretty good. I normally go for the eggs and ham but there's a potato version too. Is it friday yet? I'm hungry with all this talk about breakfast.

You should try Cuca's in Chinatown . . . it's not listed on the menu but you can request any of the breakfast items be rolled up in a tortilla. Good stuff.

That's funny, Charlie, because I hadn't even read your post and Cuca's Chinatown was next on our list. Machaca, eggs and papas was good, but the ham one was better - with big chunks of ham. The green salsa was really nice. But the BB's definitely needed tapatio or some other hot sauce on it. Also I think I'm not going to get machaca anymore, so far almost all of them have tasted the same. Any exceptions out there?

Yes Cuca's BB's do need spice.

However, I find that most places need the addition of salsa or hot sauce to BB's.

ok, two more to add to the list. two weeks ago, we were behind schedule and had to go to the cart near long's. about what you'd expect, not so great and not so big. but cheap and convenient.

then, on the other hand, next was lety's. at van ness near kern, right around the corner from the ultralounge. Three votes for the best so far by far. both the size and the taste. these were gigantic, and every bite was delicious. one drawback, the salsa they make is fresh, but doesn't have too much flavor. but they really don't need it. highest recommendation yet!

This week was Cafe Paraiso (Paradise Cafe)
Cafe Paraiso's breakfast burritos were not so great. This place has been there for at least 20 years. I did really enjoy the green salsa though. Just not so much on these breakfast burritos.

Tried Lety's and I'm pretty pleased. Good call on the salsa though - it could have more flavor.

More places to add - we even have a rating system 1-10 for each one.

Gordo Shop on the Fulton Mall (south end inside the Discount Mall). Middle ratings, not great but not the worst.  They were good sized at least. Av - 6

Toledito's on Van Ness almost near Divisadero - This got a 0.0000 for rancid chorizo. I don't like to pan places but this just has to be an exception.

Rose Cafe - North End of Fulton Mall across from us. I love their Chile Verde. The others didn't rate it as high.

Newsroom Cafe. I really wanted these to be good, because I love this spot. They were good, not the best we've had. Go for the coffee and lunch menu. I have heard others rave about the BB's though.

Lety's (again). This still is the best.

Love this list & all the comments it's generated. About three years ago I started a thread on another food-oriented website (Chowhound) about breakfast burritos in Fresno. It's old enough that it may be a bit dated but some of it may be of interest still.
