Butler Burrito Run

Reviewed by AttyKendall on Jun 23, 2010

What's it like?

OK, this is my latest food-tasting tour idea - trying carne asada burritos (CAB) at all the mexican restaurants on Butler Avenue, starting at Hazelwood.

The first was Rosie's Restaurant, right on the north corner of Butler/Hazelwood. I will only say that this CAB was good-sized and cheap, And I hope the quality of food gets better than this.

Next comes the carniceria at M & K Market on Butler just east of Hazelwood. This is strictly a to go deal. The CAB was very good. The meat was plentiful and had a good flavor. One piece of gristle. Nothing special about the other contents. At $3.50, I'd go back for this one.

I was beginning to think this Butler Burrito Run was a mistake. Then I tried Thalia's Mexican Restaurant. The CAB was ample in size, but this one was really tasty. One of the best anywhere. And much of the flavor was in the beans and rice that came inside. Many times a CAB's good flavor just comes from an overdose of garlic salt, and by the end the CAB doesn't taste so great anymore. But this one was more subtle, and as big as it was, I just wanted more when it was gone. Also, their salsa was definitely unique, and it was extremely hot. It came with fresh tomatoes, avocados, and sour cream on the side. Definitely high recommendation.

Marina's Taqueria had a pretty high quality CAB. The service wasn't the best ever, but I have come to expect that a little bit, depending on the place. My CAB came with no garnish or salsa or anything, everything was on the inside. The meat had a good flavor. The mix of (I always get them "todo," or, with everything) other ingredients was really good as well. One piece of gristle. Second best so far.

Taqueria Los Primos - this was the plainest CAB I've gotten yet, pretty much just meat, rice, and refried beans, although they did provide 3 different salsas, one of which was a delicious tomatillo salsa. The meat was steak, no doubt the best quality meat I've had yet. No gristle and it tasted like steak. And the refried beans were as good as the best I've ever had, which was several years ago at the Super Mercado on Fresno/E Street. Not the biggest one yet, but no doubt the best quality ingredients. Highly recommend.

The CAB at La Piedad Carniceria was not good at all. No redeeming qualities. This was not steak. I don't know what it was. Worst yet.

Well, that's the little half-mile section of Butler going east on Hazelwood. I might still try that taco truck across from Hanoian's, but otherwise, that's it.

Alright, just in the name of completeness, I tried the taco truck. Suprisingly, this was the most expensive CAB on Butler. It was above average, but the really great salsas available made it memorable. They even have some tables available, and a guy selling fruit and flowers.
