so i came up with the idea of trying all the hot dogs on the fulton mall from the vendor carts. it took a while, like 2 months, before all four carts were there the same day, but i finally got a chance to do it. I started at the south end and worked my way north.
the guy running the cart at fulton/kern, seemed to barely know what a hot dog was. even when i pointed to the sign that said "hot link $2.50" i got a big hot dog, not a hot link, for $3.00. so the bun was microwaved and still stale - like a week stale, not a day - and the hot dog somehow had even less flavor than the bread. not too good.
then, the two carts at fulton/mariposa. the southern one had a big hot dog that had decent flavor, and it was two dollars. the northern one only had a small hot dog, but it was decent as well.
the fulton/merced cart had a small hot dog, which the guy put the stuff on for me, which was nice. i even got a piece of jalapeno and a carrot. my first carrot on a hot dog.
the clear winner was the fulton/mariposa southern cart. all the carts had fresh onions and tomatoes and relish available, along with catsup, mustard, and mayo. however, i must admit, the title of this piece is a bit of a misnomer. there will not be any more TFFMVCHDTTs. my stomach doesn't feel so good.

I can say that the cart in front of the courthouse, not quite on the Fulton Mall, but pretty close, is decent. They have are large hot dog, almost like a mild sausage.

dan thank you for adding that comment. You inspired me to add each of the hot dog stands along mariposa to the taste test, starting with the one near the van ness underpass, then to the one you mentioned right at the main courthouse, and then jonas bros next to the old federal courthouse near city hall.
top prize went to the louisiana sausage at the main courthouse ($2.25), which was spicy and had lots of flavor. a very close second was the jonas hot link ($3.50), which was spicier but just not quite as much flavor. and third place, but still better than any on the fulton mall, was the van ness overpass stand hot link ($2.50). not too spicy, but he did put lots of good stuff on it. i also have to give them a little extra credit for being there all day, whereas the main courthouse stand closes up around 1, and jonas closes around 1:30.
i will definitely be going back to all three of these carts soon.
