this is part one of my "downtown core" restaurant reviews. all these places do a substantial lunch business but none are going to make anyone's bucket list.
china wok - i go here for their chow mein pretty routinely because it's decent, close, and cheap. for me chow mein is like comfort food. then i tried the fried fish. that was a mistake. their chinese food is passable, mostly pandaexpress-type menu items
la cocina de mama - their carne asada tacos and burritos are pretty good. i recommend those over the chile verde. they do have a special on occasion the mexican chocolate drink champurrado. you can't get this just anywhere (maybe at your mexican grandmother's house). that's really special and worth trying.
donut downtown - can't beat their selction: donuts, of course, and ice cream and chinese food and fried chicken and jello and sandwiches and hamburgers and day-old donuts and grocery items. after trying some of their lunch items i think i'll stick with the donuts.

part two
patterson building cafe - this was fine enough, not expensive (although the prices on the inside menu can be somewhat higher than the outside menu). i had a panini with fresh ingredients, nothing earth-shattering, but still a good deal.
china express - cheap. that is all.
bakery express - this really is a bakery. they make a lot of cakes and such. i tried a sandwich that for $2.25 was perfectly acceptable. bargain prices and quick. and groceries too, just in case. i just have to add that there's a cake they have on display that, while an interesting design, is old and just awful-looking.

part three
los panchos - this has been there at fulton mall and tulare for ages. i used to go here pretty regularly, but hadn't been there recently, like for years. as it turns out, i haven't missed too much, the food really wasn't that well flavored, certainly nothing special, and, honestly, i didn't feel that well when it was done. my lunch partner didn't fare any better. they do very well at lunch though, so maybe i'm just missing something.
wimpy's - what!?!!? maybe the best torta i've ever had. i was surprised, too. adobada just delicious. i've passed wimpy's to go other places way too many times.
kebab express - i decided to go with the chinese food here. when this place first opened, like three different owners ago, it wasn't too bad, but the middle eastern food just kind of kept going downhill. i figured that maybe their chinese food would be the way to go. it wasn't. the chow mein was passable, but the kung pao chicken, was something other than kung pao chicken. i don't know what it was. sorry.

Kendall, are you referring to Fulton Kebab, or did Kebab Xpress add to the menu? I've eaten at Fulton Kebab a few times - most recently, I had the felafel sandwich - and I've been underwhelmed. Great selection; poor execution.
Where is Wimpy's, though? You had me at torta.

I wouldn't give up on Los Ponchos just yet. I have gone there for years and the few dishes that I eat there, are always good. (enchilada and/or carne asada taco).
There service is great and they are always friendly. Service, more accurately, speed is important for the lunch crowd. Los Ponchos usually does this great. In summary, I suggest that any body who had a less than stellar experience here, give them another chance.
