Tacos Nayarit

What's it like?

Tacos Nayarit had been taunting me. It's a small taco shop in a tiny strip mall on Blackstone Ave., just south of McKinley Ave. Every time I drove past, my eyes were drawn to one thing: "Homemade tortillas daily."

My taco-loving heart has a soft spot for fresh, delicious tortillas. They're one of those elements that can turn an OK taco into something to crave. Needless to say, Tacos Nayarit and their fresh tortillas were on my list of Fresno tacos spots to explore.

One day, hungry for a new taco experience, I headed there in search of a that great homemade tortilla. The place is fairly clean, with modest decor ranging from Fresno State fan paraphernalia to framed "Scarface" posters.

When it came to those tortillas, though, sadly, I came away underwhelmed. My favorite homemade tortillas are at Tacos Tijuana (you gotta ask for 'em, totally worth it). These were nowhere close.  When I think of homemade tortillas, I think of hot and fluffy. These were limp and greasy -- nothing that I couldn't do at home with some oil and corn tortillas.

From there, the taco was average at best. The meat (as usual, I had carne asada) wasn't spectacular, but did the job. And the salsa was decent enough.

For the $1.25 they charged per taco (a fair price for the rico-sized taco), I couldn't be too mad. But Tacos Nayarit didn't fulfill my dream of an undiscovered Fresno taco gem either.
