Watts Family Grill

Reviewed by DaleWhite on Jun 25, 2011

What's it like?

I was looking for something different, and Yelp had this place rated highly. We drove down Blackstone, went through the alley to park in the back between auto repair shops, but walked back up front so I could ask about the enormous cooker out front. You walk in the front door of this Central Fresno dive and you are instantly transported to something more like a North Fresno eatery. New furniture, granite counter tops, flat screen TVs everywhere, brand new and clean as a whistle. Then the food came, and I literally was speachless. We ordered ribs, chicken, tri-tip and hot links. We asked for sides of mac and cheese and collard greens. Ever hear the phrase, "So good I almost cried." I now know what that means. The meat was cooked perfectly, and the b-b-q sauce was like none I have ever tasted. I found myself mining the bones for errant scraps that I might have missed the first time. Do yourself a favor. Try this place. It is a Fresno gem...

Thank you thank you thank you!

I've been on a hunt around town for some good BBQ and kept coming up wanting. Tried Watts Family BBQ yesterday.excellent.
Finding it when all I remembered were the cross streets was a bit of a challenge but so glad I made one more try.

Asked for the tri-tip & chicken but mistakenly received ribs w the tri-tip. Mistake? no sir reee.Never had a pork rib so well cooked.
The greens were succulent and delicious and the corn bread just right; not too sweet.
I did learn though to order my meat dry w sauce on the side.
You are so right... this is a gem!

FYI: the family is opening up a new site at Shaw and West. They have a big ole b-b-q machine anchored in the parking lot and they are taking up the space next to Round Table Pizza that used to be Booney's...

just a test image

glad to see this business doing well enough to expand, they are very good..but I am sorry to see Booney's go, because frankly, Tower Dogs isn't all that, and we have a dearth of good hot dog joints in this town.

Agreed. I'll never return to Tower Dogs: bad service, terrible food, and the placed smelled like rancid oil.

I have visited Watt's Family Grill several times. Unfortunately, I have never ordered the ribs. Perhaps this is one item that they do right, other than the hamburgers.

I love their hamburgers! Handmade and juicy. Not too much imagination beyond that, just a little bit of chopped lettuce & onion. But it is good.

As for other items on the menu (missing brisket :( )I have had the fried chicken & fish. The chicken was moist, but was very plain without spices or flavor in the batter. The fish was without a doubt, very dry and unenjoyable.

Tri-tip sandwich - Dry. BBQ chicken - Dry.

Beans - Excellent!

Service - Hit & miss. They are definitely friendly, but lack in memory. Went with a couple of friends and we all ordered the same thing. Two of us got our order and finished about the same time our third friend got their order. Silverware & napkins or re-fills are sometimes hard to come by when it's busy. They just keep forgetting what table needs what.

Wish them the best & hope they do well.
