Every once in a while I have a definitive "Fresno" experience—something that just feels good, and authentic, and...well, it usually tastes good, too.
Case in point: Charlotte's Bakery. My friend Kiel took me there for lunch today as part of my buy local experiment, and introduced me to the owners.
After announcing my lunch plans on Twitter, I received recommendations for the cupcakes and for any of the bread, but we were after lunch: Kiel ordered the Mediterranean sandwich, and I had the Charlotte's club. On garlic bread, of course. I view bread merely as a vessel for delivering more flavorful ingredients, and while the garlic bread is darn tasty, I appreciate that the sandwich was piled high with meat, and lettuce, and more meat.
I also appreciate that my sandwich came without tomatoes, because they're not in season.
Prices seem fair at around $6 for a sandwich. For dessert, I tried the chocolate croissant bread pudding—yum! I think the total bill came to just under $15.
There's not much to the dining area—a couple of tables inside, next to the counter where you order—but the food obviously draws a steady crowd. I'm scheduled later in the week for a video interview/tour with the owners, and I can't wait for the excuse to go back.

Charlotte's Bakery is now one of my favorites! I have been meaning to visit long ago, but never was able to find anyone that wanted to go :(
Finally, I found out that my sister frequents Charlotte's and we met for lunch one day. I can't believe what I was missing out on. Fresh baked bread, with fresh ingredients made for a great tasting sandwich. I ordered the Veggie Sandwich on my first visit. It was so good and refreshing, I have yet to stray from it. It's the only sandwich I have ordered since.
I recently took my wife and daughter. My wife ordered the Vegan Panini. She said it was great. She also had a side Potato Salad and said that was very good as well. My daughter (7 yrs old) had a BLT (minus the T). She ate half of it and said it was good. I ate my daughter's leftover sandwich the next day and saw that it was more than good. The bacon was thick and tender (not crispy) with great flavor.
The young staff are very friendly and always greet you with a smile. Charlotte's Bakery is about a 20-minute drive from my home. While there is another pretty good bread/sandwich shop just around the corner from me, I don't have a problem hopping in the car to just get that little extra enjoyment out of my meal.
