Yesterday I started a commitment to buy local for the entire month—that is, I'm going to try to buy from a locally owned business any time I spend money. There are exceptions, like filling my gas tank, and the defining lines are a bit blurry, but part of my experiment is exploring what it means to "buy local."
Day one started rocky: Kim and I drove to Tower to find late breakfast/early lunch, but every local establishment we tried was closed for the holiday (is New Year's Day a holiday?). We eventually headed north on Blackstone, spotting Country Waffles, which Kim assured me is locally owned—watch the video for her reasoning.
The short versioin: Country Waffles is a chain. Whew! I'm glad we got that out of the way.
I'm not a huge fan of breakfast-focused restaurants, but if that's your thing, they have a full menu. And it's pretty tasty; Kim ordered the French toast, which stood in a pool of butter, and I had the breakfast special (Monday - Friday only), which offered an omelette, potatoes and biscuits and gravy. I love me some biscuits and gravy.
Prices seemed fair for what we got, and I like that you don't have to wait on the waitress to refill your coffee—they just give you the pot. And the theme lives up to the name. Walking inside is like walking into the living room of my eclectic grandmother's house. Not really my cup of tea, but it seemed to fit.
All in all, it met our need for post-New Year's grub, but it's not completely local.
