Nestled just north of Sunnyside (for 30 years or so, evidently) is an unassuming square building, occupied solely by an unassuming Mexican restaurant.
I’ve found two opinions on Javier’s from my peers: love and hate. No middle ground. The menu offers standard Mexican fare, with a wide variety of combo plates, and while prices have gone up in the last year, they’re just now competitive.
I don’t eat there very often—I don’t crave the cuisine—but I joined a couple of friends from work today and ordered a #1 off the lunch menu: 1 taco, 1 enchilada, 1 tamale, rice and beans. With iced tea my bill came to just under $10 (minus tip); that glass of tea cost $2, so if you’re a water-only kind of person, $10 would cover everything.
What I would argue that Javier’s lacks in ambiance, they make up for in service—it’s very timely, and offers one of the fastest lunches in town. Seriously, I believe our orders arrived less than five minutes after we placed them, judging by the chips and salsa still left in the middle of the table.
