I worked downtown on Thursday, so Kim met me after for ArtHop. We walked to a couple of exhibits before recruiting a few friends to join us for dinner. Knowing we were near Tower, another friend tweeted a recommendation for Oggi's, which he recently reviewed. Actually, Layne's review is quite thorough, and it's clear that we had similarly positive experiences, so I'll skip some of the details.
Put simply, dinner was great. I ordered the gniocchi, which was so rich that I claimed to have had a cheese hangover, and while I don't think I'll order that again, I'd go back just for more of the eggplant parmigiana that Kim ordered.
When I lived in Greensboro, North Carolina, my dad introduced me to a humble Italian restaurant on the outskirts of downtown, where the prices were modest, the portions large, and the service unbeatable. It was a great place to take a date, if you could get a seat—the dining room had at most 10 tables, so the place filled up fast. Prior to Oggi's, I hadn't found a comparable restaurant in Fresno.
But I think Oggi's has the potential to be our go-to date night place. It has all the right ingredients (pun intended): intimate atmosphere, good food (at a decent price), and a friendly staff. I look forward to going back and trying more of the menu.
Oh, and if you're debating the pronunciation of the name (as we were), the waiter said it's "O-G". Easy enough.

Should we be concerned this hasn't bee updated since Jan? - seems like a lot of these restaurants have gone out of business. I liked this blog - should I just drop from my bookmarks?

Hi there,
Has Oggi's closed? I went back just a month or so ago, and they were busy - I haven't heard otherwise.
TasteFresno is an exploration of the community's food offerings, and we only know of a closing if someone tells us. If you read a review of a restaurant that is no longer open, please leave a note in the comments.
Cheers!

A good friend ate there a couple weeks ago and really loved the eggplant parm. Haven't been yet myself. But they're still open and apparently still quite good.

When will you be updating? - Oggi as featured restaurant is months old, has been up forever.

I love Oggi! And yes, they're still open. Coming from the East Coast, this is the only real, well-done Italian food I've ever had in Fresno. Food is fantastic. Atmosphere is great for a date, anniversary, romantic dinner, etc. And owner Louis will always come out and chat with you for just the right amount of time.

Tried Oggi for the first time tonight. You and Layne were spot on. Good food, large portions, great service. Debbie remarked that the bread was exactly like she remembered her grandmother making in upstate New York years ago. I wasn't thrilled with it at first, sort of a dense, thick focaccia. But then I discovered the bottom crust and fell in love. Debbie had the gnocchi in a tomato alfredo sauce, and my daughter and I split the frutti di mare. Everyone left full and pleased...
