Rancheros Mexican Restaurant

What's it like?

Stopped by here the other night because I wanted to grab a quick meal before heading to an event. It's close to home and I'd been wanting to try it for awhile, so I met the wife after work and ordered a couple of burritos.

As some of the other reviews here have pointed out, service is pretty terrible here. The place wasn't even close to being full, but the wait staff seemed overwhelmed. There were dirty tables throughout the room and I felt like I got a lot of attitude from the first server who helped us.

So... I was already getting a bad vibe, but I was in a rush, so I decided to stick it out. We ordered simple burritos-- 1 with beans, cheese, and rice and 1 "super burrito" with beans, cheese, rice, guacamole, sour cream, and carne asada--and had to ask for water, chips, and salsa while we waited. One good thing: the salsa was actually pretty good with a nice spice to it.

The burritos, unfortunately, were not good at all. The carne asada and guacamole--the items that should carry the most flavor--were completely bland and the tortilla and beans--basic elements of a good burrito--were cold and thick and didn't seem very fresh. Not so good.

So... we ate about half our meal and left a little hungry. Oh, and the tables around us were still dirty.

It seems like there are a lot of people who are big fans of this place so MAYBE we were just there on an off night (or MAYBE they just aren't good at burritos?), but the first impression was pretty bad for us. Hopefully things improve. I'd love to have a great Mexican place in the Clovis North area!

I've stopped here several times and can honestly say it used to be fantastic. You could somehow look past the bad service to the incredible tacos. I'll never forget walking in on a Sunday morning to a smell that reminded me of dining by the Cabo San Lucas Marina and ordering a Chili Colorado that knocked my socks off.

Sadly Over about the last 9 months or so it's just gone downhill. I gave it a last shot yesterday for lunch (1-20-11) and it was just completely meh. Sad, because when it opened it was far better than Bobby Salazars and Chapala Grill, now it is on par with those two and North East Fresno again lacks a really great taco spot.
