The Habit

Reviewed by lukemundy on Mar 02, 2010

What's it like?

My wife and I visited The Habit while shopping on a Saturday afternoon. It was about 1:30 and the line was fairly quick, but we must have just missed the rush--all the tables (indoors and out) were full. The patio seating is actually pretty nice, with windscreens and a closing roof for rainy days.

The menu has a bit of variety (tri-tip, chicken, pastrami), but it's a burger joint, so we both ordered burgers--wifey the charburger with cheese and no tomatoes, me the double charburger with cheese and everything.  The burgers are your basic small seasoned patty served with shredded iceberg lettuce, mayonnaise, pickles, and grilled onions.  Taste-wise, I'd say they're similar to In-N-Out or Colorado Grill--well-spiced, but nothing overbearing.  The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the bun.  It was pretty boring and I think I'll ask for sourdough bread next trip.

For a side, we shared some of the best onion rings I've ever had at fast food.  Seriously, they were grub.

Glad to find your review. I've on a search for a really good burger. I LOVE burgers. I've thought about trying the Habit, but have been a bit reluctant. One - I've had too many bad burgers. Two - one of the better burgers in town is next door at Whole Foods. WF makes them to order, and you can choose any of the spreads and toppings off the sandwich bar. The fries are "okay" but the burger is the bomb. The onion rings at the Habit sound great. It peaks my curiosity about their fries.

Luke, thanks for sharing - I've been a frequent visitor since The Habit's opening (my office is across the parking lot, so it's hard to beat for convenience). I hadn't put a finger on what I found lacking, but it may be the bun; I'll have to try the sourdough option. I've also found their bacon to be a nice addition :-)

Tari, the fries are pretty good (and abundant), but I don't know I'd compare the burgers to Whole Foods. Like Luke said, they're more like In-N-Out. If you do try them, please share your thoughts!

I might give it a shot. I checked their prices and they are more on the scale of In-N-Out. My burger preference leans towards the pricier, higher quality. But, for fast and inexpensive, I do like In-N-Out.

What I would really truly love to find is a good Local burger. I'll ask for suggestions on FB. Do you have any suggestions?

Good question, Tari. I've had mixed results at Irene's in the Tower - some people swear that's the best burger in town, though. I think Joe's Steakhouse downtown is also decent, though since Patrick took over Austin's (it was Hero's) across the street, I think they now have one of the best burgers around.
If you really want a local experience, check out Triangle on Belmont, just west of 99 :-)

On the note for a local burger...I happen to think that The Beerock Shop, on Bullard and West, does a fantastic burger. It is huge, juicy, cheesy, and just all-around good.

I second the suggestion of Triangle. An original Fresno experience. After lunch, a walk through the cemetary across the street is a walk through Fresno's roots and history. Fascinating.
P.S. I'm a fan of the burger experience at Colorado Grill, too.

I ate their a few weeks ago. Didn't really want to right a full review since I didn't order a burger. I had the tri-tip sandwich because I had a burger for lunch. Tri-tip sandwich was blah. If it doesn't improve I would probably take it off the menu.

Thanks for the report on the tri-tip - I've been wondering about that. It's kind of brazen to me for a chain to include that on their menu.

My office mate has also tried the hot pastrami, which he did not recommend.

Hubby and I went to The Habit the other day and I had the chicken sandwich on sourdough. First off, let me say the sourdough was delicious. The chicken sandwich was good, a thinly pounded chicken breast ordered with teriyaki sauce and all the fixings except onion. I had no trouble polishing it off.

Hubby liked his burger, but didn't think it was that special. The ingredients were quality and fresh, but didn't really stand out. For example, instead of whole leaf lettuce, The Habit uses shredded lettuce, which changes the texture of the burger.

The fries were fine, nothing special about them, but not horrible either. Perhaps we should try the onion rings next time.

I will say that the mocha milk shake that we shared at the end was fabulous! Rich, creamy coffee taste with a hint of chocolate. A really great shake.

Overall, a solid burger/sandwich place, but not the final word in our minds.
