El Rincon Mexican Restaurant

Reviewed by Tari Pie on Sep 11, 2010

What's it like?

Located in a strip-mall near my house, I have wanted to try this little Mexican restaurant since it took over the space once occupied by a horrid little Mediterranean/Greek restaurant. This morning we tried it for breakfast. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, my dad the Huevos Chile Verde, and my husband the Carne Asada Tacos.  Our visit was pleasant but not superb.

Ambience: very simple. Beige walls with almost no decorations – they may need time for that. Some amusing Mexican music played not too loudly. “Achy Breaky Heart” in Spanish? Very odd.

Service: Very nice. Not aggressive, but attentive and very pleasant. She had a nice smile and took good care of us.

Food:  Middle of the road. I’ve had much much worse Mexican, but I’ve also had much better. Mine was good, the potatoes very good. My husband’s was okay, the onions and cilantro nicely fresh. My dad liked the pork on his, but there was no visible Verde sauce on it.  It was all very simple without even the slightest hint of heat requiring us to ask for more salsa. The salsa was very tasty and fresh (sadly not spicy), but they charge you for every bowl after the first.

Value: A little high for the taste, not bad for food that is fresh.  I have a hard time with restaurants charging for condiments, particularly when the food is mild enough to require it.

All in all, not a bad experience, more middle of the road. Will I return? Possibly, since it is walking distance which is always a plus.  However, if I’m truly craving spicy tasty Mexican food, then I will hop in the car and head to Guadalajara or Don Pepe’s.

Sounds like every other short term Mexican restaurant we get. We saw the line at Batter Up this Sunday and almost hit up this little joint. From the sound of it im glad we went to Batter Up.
I miss the days of Guadalajara being around the corner on the loop.

Roger - We, too, miss that Guadalajara. Luckily, the one on Weber isn't too far. And, the one in Clovis is near my dad's work. We hit that one up for Lunch quite often.

Have you tried Don Pepe's?

Yeah I work not to far from Don P's. The burritos are not bad. A place to try out some time if you have not already is El Pescador‎. I'm a fan of giant portions and authenticity. Never tried the breakfast though.

I'll have to check it out. I like Don P's because I adore Lengua, theirs is very tender.
